Simply because males and females ARE different!

men have their buttons and zips on the oppsite side from women because years ago men were dressed by someone else( their wives or their tailor, I suppose for rich people)

I think it's the other way round- men dressed themselves and the women were dressed by their maids. Interestingly, I believe all the zips are the 'women's' way round in America.

A gentleman has buttons on the right hand side of his coat [jacket etc] because when his great great garndfather wore a sword he had it at his left hip [assuming he was right handed] so that it could be drawn across the body. So that his cuff didn't get caught in the buttons of his open coat his tailor put them on the right hand side.

I assume that zips simply followed the fasion.

Because the sword was worn on the left hip we still mount horses from the left so that the right leg [without sword] is thrown over. In the UK we still drive on the left so that traffic passes each other with their sword hands.

When I was younger I used to think that it was baecause all men were right handed and all women were left handed!

(Being male, I am right handed...)
