Should it not be classed as "the company you pay" eg. our electric comes from the Hydro Board (still call them that even though it became SSE), yet I pay a different company.

Tough question as I think it depends on individual needs.I personally am very happy with EDF energy.

It depends very much on the criteria used to decide "best" and "worst".
If you subscribe to Which? (as I do), you will have a very good idea of the utility providers worth considering and those that you should avoid. The latter includes just about all the "big names"....for gas, electricity, phone and broadband.
