Do any abers have any knowledge of these? I was considering buying one for an elderly relative as a present for safety reasons. Are they worth the expense and how long do they retain their heat as opposed to ordinary bottles?

Hi vakayu, I got one as a present last year. The inside of it contains some sort of bean which retains the heat once you microwave it. Overall I would say its not that bad.

Hi Sam,hope you are well, how long do they keep warm as opposed to ordinary ones?
I have one and although they don't stay hot for all that long (certainly not as long as hot water) I think they're worth it for the convenience.
not much more than an hour or so, don't know what was paid for it as it was a present. But it only takes 90 seconds to heat it up.
Would they be doing their own heating and how able/with it are they? Its not difficult to overheat them!
I use a wheat bag. 2 mins - max - in the microwave and it stays very warm for about ten minutes, fading to lukewarm after about ten/fifteen more minutes.
As a hot water bottle devotee (OK addict) I couldn't be doing with one of these as they cool down so quickly. And woof is right, anything done in a microwave can get dangerously hot.

Thank-you all very much for your input, much apppreciated I shall have to consider it more carefully now with the many pitfalls,I would not wish to make any more difficulties, rather than trying to prevent accidents! Thanks again all.
are you thinking of these? http://www.hotwaterbottles.net/?gclid=CLni9Yq5proCFfHItAodviIAOA

I have one and it's great, but it can get very very hot if you "ping" it for a few seconds too long. I have a bad back and the heat lasts for at least an hour.. I use it driving to work, and it's still hot when I get there. I love it, but your elderly relative would have to be capable of getting the timing right.
Question Author
Thanks for that sara3 very informative,my relative is very responsible and capable of getting timings right, always, maybe wrongly assuming there are various timings given on differing rates of microwave 700w 750w 850w etc.which I would hope there is as timing seems to be crucial to prevent over-heating,also do you put a cup of water in the microwave when heating it up,as I have read this is advisable to prevent drying out?
no, you use water (in a separate cup!) with the bags full of wheat/grain/lavender etc.

with the Hotties, you just sling it in the microwave :o)
Question Author
Hi again sara does it give separate timings for varying microwave settings as this seems to be very important and cannot just be guessed?
It's going to depend on what microwave she has. Mine, which is a new one doesn't have the same settings as listed on meal packs so I have to guess a bit.
My friend has a brilliant one, it looks like a Frisbee and its heated up in the microwave, I will find out where she got it if you like ? Its still warm in the morning.
Question Author
Hi woofgang thanks for that I would have thought it would be more precise than that as guesswork seems wrong.
Question Author
Wow jasmin that sounds excellent as the staying warm factor of them did not seem very good,I would be interested to find out more if you wouldn't mind.
For those hot water bottles, I think it is wrong! Less risky for a wheat bag I think. Does she use the microwave a lot?
its got some kind of gel inside of a hard plastic exterior , I will text her now and ask her what its called and where she got it.
Question Author
No woofgang not a lot,it was the lookalike hot water bottles I was hoping to get as she is very traditional and it would imitate one without the dangers of scalding and she has very arthritic hands and am concerned about the stoppers etc,a very iindependent lady and anything to avoid mishaps the better.
