This has turned into an snobby thread! Regardless of where you shop, would you be upset with being asked to put your personal belongings on the shopping- belt?
When you're down on your luck Thenery you will be grateful for shops like these.

if they were suspicious of you, what good would asking you to put your handbag on the belt do, unless they searched it?
Did she look in it?

I'd have been offended yes.
I shop at Aldi, mainly for fruit and veg. I tried Lidl yesterday - that was good too.
Aldi is a brilliant shop - anyone who won't shop there because of its previous 'image' as cheap and tacky is just plain daft. The quality is high and the stuff is cheap, what more could you want. Like all supermarkets, it is better at some things than others - but overall it is easily my food shop of choice.

The 'bag on the belt' question is interesting - so I asked an assistant at my local Aldi why they might do that.

It's nothing to do with either the look of the customer or the contents of the bag.

They just have a policy of making sure that every trolley is empty (or contains only very clearly identifiable goods to be paid for). So any large bag must be removed from the trolley in case (either accidentally or deliberately) it is concealing some goods which need to be paid for.

I suspect in this case it was just the easiest/quickest option to suggest that the customer put her bag on the belt. Nothing personal, just the way the system works for everyone.

Happy Shopping :+)

Mind you, who puts their handbag in the trolley? I'd be frightened of it getting stolen whilst I was looking at the shelves.
Boo
I bought a cheap dog collar with a click fastener in Poundland and keep it in my handbag. I always use it to secure my bags to the trolley.

Not too long ago 'Toy R Us' made you check in any bags you had (not handbags I don't think) and collect them on your way out. Don't know if they still do it, haven't been for ages. (too big and too expensive) -rosy
nope ..never happened to me..you must look dodgy !!! lol
Never happened to me, but I always empty my bag conspiciously of goods onto the belt - I often can't be bothered to get a trolley.

Thenry - that's so supercilious - ALDI has great stuff you can't get anywhere else.
Thenry I see you are back with us <sigh> ............
I love Aldi, it makes sense to save money whatever financial situation you are in, their fruit and veg are such good value, I just wish we had one nearer to us (12 miles away) I would have just held my handbag not put it on the belt, but I guess they are just doing their job.
they do an excellent salmon en croute !!!
Not addressing the question directly but in Western Australia checkout operators regularly ask politely to have a look inside bags that are not from that store.
It happens to teenagers, pensioners and every age in between. It looked a bit odd to a tourist but seems to be an accepted thing down there.
As to Aldi, never had a bit of bother with them. When they're selling plants they do ask that you don't put them on the belt so I guess that would be covered by sunny-dave's comment.
Their store, their rules I suppose, I don't see the need to get rankled about it.
