Pataks curry pastes...

I made a curry last night from a recipe I got off the BBC website. It uses pataks madras paste. Is using ready prepared paste just as good as using separate spices?

I know when I make Thai green curry I prefer to make my own paste...

It was lush btw...just had the left overs for lunch :-)

I've used them loads ummmm (in fact its the only curry paste i will use) I think its not far off making your own just quicker.....
I guess it is a personal taste issue. You seemed to think it was fine.

That's good then because I really enjoyed it. I'd only ever used it once before but that was for spicy fish cakes :-)
Agree with pd. And they last a long time, even when opened. Unless you buy and use the fresh spices frequently and often, they will go stale.

Hello OG...I'm inquiring because I don't usually make home made curries. It's been years actually...so I haven't really got anything in memory to compare it with.
i like them, good for making dahl as well

I must get on a massive pataks experimentation.

I never used to be a curry fan....but I think my taste buds have changed..
thats true ginge.... i think it says they are okay for a week after opening but they last months literally
Look out for bargains - they are often on BOGOF at supermarkets. I stock up- buying one or two of each variety. The Balti version is very good,too.

Cheers....I like Balti. I tried one of those from a takeaway recently.
I use them all the time...i use half a jar of paste to 1kg of diced chicken breast and stir fry. I do sometimes add sliced ginger and garlic too.

When the chicken is browned...and it will smell damn good at this point, i add a tub of coconut greek yoghurt (Rachels...from tesco) and a small tin of chopped tomatoes.

Add mushrooms, onions, peppers, pineapple or whatever you want...or nothing at all !!!

Simmer until a nice thick sauce is achieved.

I seeeeeeee.
Tesco are doing a fabulous range of their own brand pastes simply called "ingredients".

They are currently on 3 for 2 and the Goan Masala paste is to die for!
I am deeply fond of the Pataks fruity biriani done with chunks of chicken

Always worth freezing any leftover sauce, rather than risk it going off. Freeze in icecube trays, and pop in a bag when frozen.
