Well this is certainly different, maybe not special, but I bought this last year for my father in law who is difficult to buy for and my other half also. Both love it! It depends how passionate he is about insects, but most men see them as a challenge!http://www.sourcing4u.co.uk/shop/product_info. php?products_id=28
I have given a couple of people these modern "old fashioned" wind up torches which require neither bulbs or batteries and which literally last a lifetime because there is no bulb to fail, or battery to run low and they've been thrilled with them. . All you do is wind them up for 30 seconds and they give enough light for 30 minutes use. You can get them in Robert Dyas for about 10 or try Googling Wind Up torches and you'll find various websites which sell them.
Perhaps you would want to get him a unique gift from the movie `A Christmas Story'.Remember the scene when the Xmas leg award was given?
