Turkish police have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say was buried alive by relatives in an "honour" killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys.
The girl, who has been identified only by the initials MM, was found in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre hole dug under a chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.
Police made the discovery in December after a tip-off from an informant, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported on its website.
The girl had previously been reported missing.
The informant told the police she had been killed following a family "council" meeting.
The death reopens debate over 'honour' killings in Turkey, which account for half of all the country's murders.
As I've said before, what sort of people put some crazy idea of honour before the love of ther children.
ok maybe I can say more on thinking about it but I wonder about the power of emotions/caring for your kids over tradition (or whatever you call 'honour' killings). As I type this my 16 year old daughter walks into the room - how can a mother or father do this ?
Its beyond belief that any parent could put honour or whatever before the love and caring of a child. It breaks my heart whenever I read this type of story - children put their trust into their parents to do right by them.
I understand....but may be wrong.....that Turkey is waiting to be admitted into the EU..would you like this country with it's terrible human rights record, to be admitted?
Going by the Turks I know in UK, there would be no leniency for the perpetrators of this crime. They will suffer worse than same criminal held in UK jails - good job too!
Craft you're right. US government have been urging EU to accept Turkey as full members. They already have EU associate status. There are 73 million of the blighters. It's not only the honour killings......they have a huge secret police set-up and virtually wrote the "torture handbook".
Honour killings have happened many times and the punishments when actually carried out have been mild. Several times the investigation was dropped because of so called insufficient evidence. We don't want such a country in the EU.
I can't believe that in the 21st century these things still happen.
Turkey shouldn't be allowed in to the EU, they are a corrupt
nation , we can't house our own people ,so do we really want
another lot here on the benefit system ,and all that goes with it .
