Hi!!

Im heading to London in a month or so for my birthday and im going to London theatre (haymarket , i think). Ive been to London quite a few times and love it, and im always astonished by the london fashion. I live in a a small ish town in the south west and shops are limited. Im going with a friend of mine who is very style concious and has lived in london for some time. I have managed to pick up a halter neck maxi in black, however im not sure if this is appropriate. to formal, too casual?! It has a large empire line belt and is floor length. I was going to team it with a silk cardi and vintage black/gold heels. I still see going to the theatre as a big thing where you should dress up and make an effort, however ive been told its not like that anymore.

Seeing as its my birthday, I wanted to make a particular effort, however i dont want to look out of place.

Any ideas? Am I on the right track?

Thanks!

I think anything goes these days but I am with you and like to dress up. Go for it. It makes an outing more special when you feel good.

Thanks hun! I think I will!
Sounds a little over the top soph - but also sounds wonderful. You wear exactly what you want - if you want to dress up, then do so.

Theatregoers in general these days are more casually dressed, particularly on the weekdays, but you still get some who dress up - and why not? There are no rules, well not as far as I'm concermed, but I'm probably a lot older than you and long ago stopped worrying about what other people were wearing, and now just wear what I feel like.

It's your birthday, so dress how you want to. I would do too if it happened to.... me!
When ever I've been it's been smart casual. My son lives in London and they are the same. Even been to Royal Albert Hall andThe Royal Opera House and most seem to go smart casual. Enjoy your show and don't worry too much about what you are wearing.
I would echo the same sentiments as others. Anything goes, you can go in torn jeans or dress up in satin and tiara's. No-one cares any more, especially in London.
Personally if I were younger I would have worn jeans and a man's dinner jacket and some great high heals.

Have fun. Dress up and enjoy yourself. Your chance to be adventurous and make a statement.

Soph. To be honest, nobody will even notice if you look daft!
One person's daft is another person's stylish...!

haha, thanks lottie! That is very true!
With the trend towards "anything goes" these days you may get some second glances - but many of these will be of an admiring nature, so go for it if that's what you want.

I guess from what you say, your friend will be well-dressed anyway.

Have a wonderful birthday, and enjoy the show :)
