My son is getting married in September. I have to find an outfit. I am not the dress and jacket and court shoes type of person. I wear black trousers for work and live the rest of my life in jeans/jodhpurs or cheeseclothy, floaty long skirts in summertime. Any ideas where I can find a nice outfit, they won't let me wear jeans!

Spoilsports! Seriously though have a wee look in shops like John Lewis or Debenhams...there's lots of nice floaty things around this year! I also really like Jigsaw or Coast or maybe there's a specialist mother of the bride type shop in your area!
Meant to say, that if you try Debenhams look out for dresses by Ben De Lisi he does some gorgeous silky floaty stuff!

someone previously suggested ann balon as a designer that does slightly different (but appropriate) outfits of the more floaty, less formal variety. I think they still look quite formal but try website below - sure it caters for grooms mother too!!

Thank you libertie and Sparkles3. I've just spent some time going through the web sites you suggested. I like some of the Ann Balon stuff and the Jigsaw things are brilliant too, they've also got some lovely linen trousers on there that i may just have to order! At least I now have an idea where to start.

my mum owns a mother of the bride/groom shop.... outfits for september weddings come into stock at the end of may...if you are near edinburgh pop in, she does the traditional but also for the more casual mother and also softer dresses/skirts and she does anne balon

good luck!!

Thanks bellasasha, but I live near Bristol so a very long way from Edinburgh. I feel a bit more hopeful now that I'll find an outfit that suits me. Nothing worse than a big occasion like that and you don't feel like you at all because your clothes are all strange. My motor engineer grease monkey of a husband has to wear top hat and tails (tee hee)

Why not wear linen trousers and jacket like Twiggy is wearing. You can wear them as seperates after the wedding.

They do look nice don't they. Twiggy is the same age as me and when we were teenagers everyone said I looked like her. About the only similarity now is the hair, the rest of me hasn't aged as well as she has (she's got more money than me!)
Bellasasha, could you tell me the name of your mothers shop in Edinburgh? I am starting to look for a mother-of-the-groom outfit for next October and would like to see some of the Anne Balon stuff up close, thanks.
