I used to hitch-hike in my youth, and pick up hitch-hikers when I started driving. That was years ago. Today, the world is a different place and I no longer stop for anyone. Very sad.
as a trucker the days of me giving someone a lift in my cab are long gone. due to all the holdups where drivers have been assaulted for they,re loads by hitch hikers they have picked up. today you can not even risk talking to a fellow driver at a truckstop about where you,re off to. my company makes it a sackable offence if a driver picks up hitchikers. it is so bad we are instructed that if we are stopped by the police not to lower the window or get out . but to display a card saying i am carrying a valuable load and am willing to drive to the nearest police station but have instructions not to get out elsewhere..as for tradeplate hitchers they fair no better.
Been in the same situation as cockneyexile. A lot of haulage firms can't get insurance to cover passengers who are non employees, so you can't pick anyone up. Personally, as an owner driver , I can, but the only people I pick up are platers (we have loads of car distribution places in the county).
