I believe that this is the Friday 4 weeks before Xmas in most places,and it's when Xmas shopping is supposed to begin! but here in South Wales it's the last Friday of work before Xmas, and it's not a nice day for most of us, there are lots of drunken folk around, they drink from lunchtime till late at night, I stay in on that night!..........it's horrid!......

Yes WL - its called " black-eye " friday in the NE . Workers often finish early and go for a drink together . As the day goes on , and the drink takes effect , old scores are often settled , either within that group or with rivals - hence the black eyes ...and sore heads .

It's the day after Thanksgiving when the USA go mad in the sales !

It's a national holiday.

The following day, the American traders return to work in a jolly mood, full of goodwill. Trading is usually buoyant.

Accounts, which might be in the red, benefit from the buoyant trading, and frequently finish the day in the black.
