What sort of war book?
If you want a novel about being a VAD nurse in WWI then you could try "Not So Quiet" by Helen Zenna Smith (Virago).

If you wanted a book about the gorier side of war from a German Panzer point of view you could try books by Sven Hassel.

Both good reads!

I love "All Quite on the Western Front" very sad and shows you the horror of war
"Quiet" even ,sorry
Antony Beevor - His book Stalingrad was awarded the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-fiction,
Bomber by Len Deighton. Story of a bombing raid on 31st June 1942 (yes..so its definately fictional) from everyones aspect. Crew, townsfolk, fighter pilots etc. A brilliant book.

Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five

Dalton Trumbo, Johnny Got His Gun

Joseph Heller, Catch 22

Sebastian Faulks - Birdsong
If you're interested in non-fiction, try 'Fools Rush In' by Bill Carter, about the Bosnian war. It's a great read, and a testament to the triumph of the human spirit.

You haven't specified which war, but 'Saving Private Ryan' got me pretty good. Now I'm onto the auld film scores 'Schindler's List' is there too. One from my school days is 'The Silver Sword'.

We Were Soldiers is brilliant, mainly because it is very detailed regarding the serving soldier.

Also, The Little Men, about the ordinary lads who went to the Somme is excellent.

If you want to go back a bit further in time Clawell's Shogun and Tai Pan is excellent. Not war books as such but for some reason I thought of them :)
Enigma, by Robert Harris - recently been a film, too. A love-story-meets-whodunit against a backdrop of the Atlantic convoys/u-boats confrontation.
