or a metre in the UK
Also used in the building trade (among others). Say you wanted to make a wooden door frame 2m x 1.5m, you would need 7 linear metres of timber.

The French started off defining it and spelled it 'metre'. In the UK, we acknowledged that and continued to spell it 'metre'. Then the USA got hold of it, and their worldwide influence in altering the English language has resulted in 'meter' being accepted as an alternative spelling.
Probably to distinguish it from a square metre.
................or cubic metre.
A meter is used to display values as in gas meter, electricity meter etc.
