c = the speed of light (honest!)

Thanks Jumbuck I really didn't know .
c stands for constant which in different contexts stands for different things but yes in this case is speed of light.
While not engaging in controversy, actually, "c" stands solely for the speed of light and is derived from from "Celeritas", which is the Latin word for speed. Apparently Einstein initially used the upper case "V" to denote the speed of light (which, by the way is c = 3 × 10^8 m/s), but early on switched to "c"... You can read the long an short of it here:
