Is a clove a whole "bulb" of garlic or just one of the segments?

I am doing spicey-garlicy potato wedges. I never use recipes so just tend to chuck the stuff in (always tastes good tho) Anyway just mentioned that I always use at least 4 cloves and someon insisted it was 4 bulbs!!

lol - no... a clove of garlic is just one little slice of a whole garlic bulb.... and is far too small in my estimation ! Mind, each little clove does have its own bit of thicker peel to separate it out from the clove living next door..
