Don't be without it! Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy should be on everyone's PC.
They work together quite happily but don't forget to update regularly.

I'd just like to echo the above and add AVG as a recomendation for free virus protection.

I only use those three, no Norton or McAfee and my system runs like a dream, bug and virus free!
