Books and casinos in all world use the spread points to control their betts. How do they calculate the spread points? It is suppoused to be a math analysis, could anybody explain that analysis?

Ex. N.F.L. New England Patriots -7 vs Oakland Raiders.

Spreads are arbitrary and based not so much on the prowess of a set of teams but on the amounts of money bet on them. To prove this simply call a bookie in New England and compare the spread with one in Oakland. Someone in Boston will get the Raiders and 7 but if you're in Oakland you will get less , more likely 3.
The point of spreads is to get the same amount of money bet on each team. Bookies make their money on what was once called "the vig" . If you bet 100 with a bookie and win you will not get back 200. The amount they keep is the vig and it will vary vary around the 20% of the bet, depending on what the traffic will bear.
