My Dad is a smoker so I go upstairs when he light up for a cigarette. I then come down about 30 minutes later and sit in the room that he has had the cigarette in will I still be a passive smoker and suffer the effects of it?

Yes you might well still be a passive smoker although it will depend on the amount of ventilation in the room.
A well-ventilated room will have dispersed the smoke outside by the time you've got downstairs.
If your Dad's sitting there with all the windows closed, you might as well stay there while he smokes.
People defend their family and loved ones often giving their lives so that those they care about may live.

It beggars belief that some people happily smoke around their own kids.

It's like saying 'My addiction to this dried plant is more important to me than your life, get asthma, get cancer, I don't care.'

Wonderful.
Apart from the health risks for the smoker and the dangers of passive smoking for others, there is one aspect of smoking which nearly always seems to be overlooked. That is the fact that a smoky atmosphere is extremely unpleasant for non-smokers. The smell hangs in the air and permeates soft furnishings and clothing.

It is this lack of consideration for others by so many smokers which causes ill-feeling towards them.
Maybe you could get your dad to read these posts he needs to show more cosideration to his family. One of the ilnesses caused by smoking is Emphysema an EXTREMELY UNPLEASANT diisease that i lost my mother to, it took her 2 years to die slowly, painfully. That was 20 years ago, it scared the c**p out of me amd made me give up. I suppose i was guily od smoking around other people who did not but knowing now what it does i would be different
Hi, my mum is also a smoker and i too go upstairs everytime she lights up. I spend nearly all my time upstairs whenever im at home, due to my mum smoking. She actually thinks that i cant smell it from the across the room! She says 'its nowhere near you'. Duh! Smoke spreads! I wish she'd quit, but there's no chance of her doing that! Oh well!
Good point SteveD. I hate the smell.

Whenever a smoking colleague returns from one of their frequent fag breaks and they breathe anywhere near me I just want to say 'You stink'. Though I'd like to put it a lot more colourfully.

I've not dared yet.
Another annoyance is that the smokers go to the entrance doors at work, so anyone coming in or out has to walk through their veil of poo. They should go right away from others.
