Am I right to think that to dry your hands on a towel in a public toilet (after washing the first, obviously) is one of the most unhygenic things you can do? It always makes me cringe when I see this in a pub and makes me wonder whether the landlord/landlady has actually been on even the most basic hygiene course. I then just have to wash my hands and shake them dry or wipe them on my clothes, thus wetting and creasing them, not exactly what I would llike on a night/.day out.

Whilst I can think of many things more unhygenic, like drinking raw sewerage, I must admit I certainly wouldn't use one.
That would depend on how well the other people that have used the facilities have washed their hands wouldn't it?
Lets be frank about this - if you need to move your bowels, rather than just pass water you are going to touch the toilet seat (probably), your private parts, the door handles, the handle to flush the loo, the taps, the soap (or whatever container it happens to be stored in if its liquid soap) and you are concerned about the towel? (Oops sorry just noticed your name is violetblue, and realised ladies sit all the time. apologies)
The last thing that is touched before you leave is the door handle out - what about if the person before you hasn't washed their hands and has done something unpleasant ? I try to avoid public loos if I possibly can and I'm a bloke!
I used a toilet in a restaurant in Palermo a few years ago. I know I should have checked first, but there was no paper. I had no socks on so I had to use the hand towel. It was ok though, i folded it so you couldn't see what I'd done.
