A magnet can and will mess about with any data stored magnetically, on magnetic tapes. This includes video tapes, and computer hard drives (though the hard drive is encased in metal, so the effects aren't quite as strong).

A strong enough magnet probably can make it pretty much non-recoverable, yes.

To add to Fo3nix's reply, it'll certainly kill a floppy disc, and the stripe on your bank/credit/debit card!
