Can any one help me?!!!!

In the syllabus, for OCR, it says that I need to know how to "calculate work done by a constant in situations including those where the force is NOT in the same direction as the displacement." If any one can help me by explaining it for me as I can't find it in the text book!!!!

Just multiply the distance moved by the component of the force in the direction of the movement.
Resolve the force into two components: one in the direction of the displacement, the other at right angles to it. To get the work done, muliply the former component by the displacement.
