I haven't been in a newsagents for years - don't need change for the bus, nor a packet of fags at 7am.  I subscribe to magazines so they are delivered.

The newsagents local to me is next to a Spar which is open longer and sells sweets and chocolates. Thinking about it, it must be 20 years or more for me

Probably yesterday.

What's a "newsagent"?

A spook who spreads the good word on days off.

Yesterday.

The local shop does a small range of groceries.  I buy milk, bread, and eggs from them.

I get a paper from the Spar - usually Mail on Wed & i on Fri or Sat.

Some here have a daily delivery - the paper "boy" has upgraded from a push bike to a scooter.

Yesterday and probably today

Question Author

I mean a proper newsagent shop, not a Spar or other convenience store that sells papers and magazines

Haven't most of them evolved into "convenience" stores now Barry just to keep afloat?

Question Author

I really don't know.  My local shopping area is very small but has a Spar, small Sainsbury's, greengrocer, butcher, bakery, greasy spoon cafe, tearoom and a newsagents.  As well as a charity shop, several barbers and hairdressers, a library, post office and a craft shop. A tattoo artist and vape shop, a hardware/pet shop.

I don't know how the newsagents keeps going.

An Aldi will be joining them soon.  It really is just a small row of shops on a narrow road

I can't think of a single store anywhere near me or my local town that I'd describe as a newsagent any more - unless possibly Martins (does that count? Not sure as I haven't been in there for years).

Yesterday

The only newsagent I go to is WHSmith...do they still qualify?  I'll go in maybe once every 10 days...sometimes just to browse. I'll buy cards there also.

Question Author

My wife has told me the newsagent sells, as I would expect, papers, comics, magazines and a full range of sweets and chocolates, including in jars ready for weighing.

Also cigarettes and tobacco.

Greetings cards, lottery tickets and scratch cards .

It is also a Pay Point.

No groceries or toiletries

our newsagent stopped delivering 20 years ago or more - modern parents would sooner pay their kids pocket money than send them out into the snow at 7am a prey to local weirdos. I don't blame them, but it did rob the newsagents of their USP.

Several have surived, all the same, despite competition from the local mini-Sainsbury; being near the station helps.

A man who looks to be in his 70s deliveries the papers where I live

maybe he's the newsagent (or his grandfather)?

Always liked newsagents, but all the ones near me are part of large chains such as One Stop. In effect mini supermarkets.

I Iike the small, independent corner shop type of newsagent, but not many around any more
