Last night little Tigs went to bed but then whatsapped me just before 11 saying that he could hear creaking and carpet scraping noises and was scared. I went upstairs to assure him there was no one else in the house and that floorboards sometimes creak depending on fluctuating temperatures. I couldn't explain the carpet scraping noises....anyone know?

Do you hear weird noises in your house?

No, thank goodness!
We have an American Fridge freezer that makes a certain quota of ice each day and when that randomly struck up one day when I was working from home it scared the living daylights out of me.

Otherwise I've heard the odd bump and bang but nothing that's spooked me.
Yes, from time to time, especially when the wind is strong enough to rattle vents etc..
Nothing like when I was growing up in a 300 yr-old+ house. Once I accepted the idea of ghostly footsteps I slept much more securely - they always stopped at the bedroom door. :)

I've got an American fridge freezer with just a water dispenser and that makes loads of weird clicking noises every now and then. Not nice at night time!
Our American style fridge specifically states that the strange noises coming from it from time to time are 'nothing to worry about'.

The 'scraping noises' could be something as simple as bedding rubbing on the ear and are misinterpreted by an already spooked child.

Crikey, I would've been pooping my pants if I heard footsteps when no one else is around! :o(
I should have said that the instruction manual states the stuiff about the noises, not the fridge itself.

It's Ken Wood but he can't speak.
In heavy rain, water from a downpipe splatters onto a tiled sloping area by my bedroom. It took me a while to realise what it was.
With three cats to knock things over, of course I hear noises in the night!

I think that one of my my most alarming moments in bed though was actually in the morning, when I lived in Sheffield. From time to time I would dream that I could hear someone coming up the stairs but I'd always wake up before they got up to my bedroom, so that I could breath a sigh of relief. However, on this occasion, I found myself dreaming that somebody was coming up the stairs, woke up and could still hear the footsteps!

My mate, knowing that I was a late riser and also that my neighbour had a spare key to my house, had borrowed that key and was bringing a freshly-made cup of tea up to me. He nearly got it thrown all over him for scaring the life out of me!

;-)
Have you got birds roosting in the roof or mice? They sound like a herd of elephants when its quiet.
My house isn't old but it certainly creaks and makes odd noises in places, especially on a windy nights like last night. I would re-assure him that you'll investigate thoroughly if he hears anything again.
Sure this isn't your issue but when I was about 9 I kept telling my parents I could little feet running around in the loft at night. They dismissed it repeatedly as the imaginings of a child until they eventually heard it. Turned out to be rats up there.

There's usually an explanation for the noises heard. I didn't read the manual that came with the fridge and after a while figured out that the noises were just normal noises from a fridge.
Question Author
I did mention that maybe a pigeon or other bird might be in the loft. I'll check up there tomorrow during the daytime. Don't fancy going up there now.
The scratching noise would indicate birds to me.

We've got *** squirrels.
More likely to be a squirrel in the loft
I live in a block of flats...bedroom on the upper floor. Sometimes, just as I'm waking, I'll scratchy 'steps' over my head. It's always when it's light, but never later in the day. In fact...it seems to stop when I actually get up. But...I can lie in bed, eyes open and listening and hear it.
I've always assumed it to be seagulls or pigeons.
Could be in the loft, but more likely in the roof space or between roofing felt and tiles. Is your house v old?

Also tits squeeze in small spaces then make a racket moving about.

The birds in our roof space drive the cats nuts.
Or i could just tell you a spooky story?!

60s build, BM. He said it was more like carpet scraping noises so I guess a soft dragging noise. Never heard it myself though.

I like spooky stories :o)
