Elsewhere I read that Dobbs may have been a shepherd who hung himself. What do you know?

My friends grew up in the area and as kids they were always told it was the grave of a local highway-man, who was left hanging at the road side as a warning to others. I believe Anglia t.v's "History Man"did a prog. on the subject.
