Well, when I was at my (Catholic) Grammar school in the 50s, I was taught that "all this evolution theory was rubbish".  Fortunately, my father was a devout atheist and so "put me right".  Here we are, 50 years on, and I read only last week that the Vatican had again denounced evolution.  Seems like it definitely doesn't work for large religious organisations.

Unscientific responses so far in the Science section. Brains haven't clicked in, still at the dripping sarcasm stage. Sorry to intrude on your thread MargeB. I attempted to start (at your invitation, without which I felt unable to submit anything at all) some sort of discussion about JC in Body and Soul. Response from you ? Nothing.

If you are expecting a conclusion from this question, it's not going to happen and you well know it. If you however want a showcase for your own scientific expertise, then you're on track.

My opinion (then I'll go away, well I might) is that the creation/evolution debate is peripheral to Christian belief. If you wish to discuss Christianity with someone who won't be cowed by 'Nope' and 'Yeah' then I'm your man.

Let's hope there are minimal lols in this thread.

I am so glad you posted this question, simply because I wanted an opportunity to tell you how much I appreciated your educated comments on that last thread! I only found it yesterday since I am not normally inclined to read threads about aliens. I have to admit that I spent 2 hours reading the whole thread once I realized it had become a religion vs. evolution debate!

I am currently a PhD student in Ecology and Evolution, and I also believe deeply in my religion. I do not see the bible and evolution by natural selection as mutually exclusive.

And I wholeheartedly believe that we did indeed evolve from a common ancestor with apes (and fish, and birds, and bugs... and plants, for that matter).

Hey, no-one's bothered to answer the actual question yet! So... not exactly. Humans and the other apes evolved from a common ancestor, rather than from each other as such.
