do aliens exist, cause it occurred to me the other day that if they do then that totally rules out the theory of god because in the bible it says that there are no other planets in the universe or any other galaxy that have life on so if there is aliens then were all screwed cause theres no heaven either

what makes you think the Bible is right, and what makes you think it's the word of your God?

I propose that other intelligent beings do exist in the Universe, that there is a God (maybe not your God, but there is a God), and that it is the Bible that is wrong.

well thats my point if the bible is wrong then who writ the bible, there is only meant to be the 1 god but if aliens exist then there never was and another thing if u have ever read the bible it says that there will be lots of devestaing disasters earthquakes will get worse and they are which confuses me more because that is coming and has been true for a while

Where does it say that in the Bible?

Question Author

matthew 24:7

Question Author

there just cannot bo god and aliens there can only be the 1, and i am sure there something else out there but i also belive that there is a god for when you read the bible and read all those things that thay have foretold it is very hard not to believ that he dosent exist, unless we go back to the ridicoulous theory that god is an alien

willow27, the bible was indeed invented, by people so completely off their trolleys that they were prepared to be martyred, beheaded for their invention, prepared to invent a religion where they couldn't even be bothered to harmonise their 3 major accounts of their Messiah's life, where they had WOMEN (for goodness' sake) discover the empty tomb, and which relies on one of the following:

a) Christ never existed

b) Christ was crucified and died, full stop

c) Christ was crucified but was pulled down and revived

d) Christ was crucified and raised from the dead.

Which one is the most amenable to the invention of a religion ?

Question Author

mfewell, have you ever read the bible

willow27, yes, all the way through twice, and many many dippings-into since. I had lots of problems with Chronicles and Kings and especially the massacre of the inhabitants of Jericho, but for me it's the NT where it really takes off and speaks. What are your favourite bits ?

The Bible - a good novel?

willow27, I like your style, keep shooting from the hip.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you talk of "God and aliens unable to both exist", is this because you think if God exists he would have made humans as his special creation and that we're not just one type of evolved intelligent being among many?

I think this is an interesting point, never seen it discussed on Answerbank before in this way. Hope this thread runs...

Counsel for the prosecution certainly hasn't done a lot of shooting from the brain so far. The whole premise is based on 'if aliens exist'. Since this is about as provable as the resurrection this thread is likely to stall very quickly unless we insomniacs keep it going !
Interesting willow, and I can't get it out of my head now, what is your evidence for aliens ? And if they exist how is that incompatible with a god. Maybe the bible was only written for men and earth.  Does the recent tsunami tie up with Matthew 24:7.

Matthew 24:7

For nation will rise against nation,

and kingdom against kingdom.

And there will be famines, pestilences,

and earthquakes in various places."

How do you get your interpretation from that concerning aliens?

Wasn't Jesus an alien then? No? My primary school teacher has a lot to answer for!
I'm sorry, at some point I will try and offer an intelligent viewpoint to one of these threads, but for now I just think I'll swing back to Chatterbank...

im not sayin that i belive fully in aliens but i still have an open mind, what i am saying is if aliens existed and so did god then the bible is nothing more than a hoax as it says in the bible that god only created us which means aliens are a definate no, and clanad i was relating that to what the bible says and what is happening tody, and yes if the bible is right then the tsunami is is connected, but my whole point is is the bible a hoax, is is god or aliens because there can only be the one

It is very unlikely indeed that aliens (intelligent extra-terrestrial) do not exist. We do not need to be able to point them out to show that they exist.

Many people are 'hooked' into the idea of believing in God because they make the mistaken assumption that:

-human intelligence is so complex that it could not have arisen without the intervention of a more intelligent being.

-the earth and all on it were created in situ by this Superbeing, and none of it evolved over time.

Well.  We now know, contrary to what the church touted to the world for the last chunk of human civilization, that the world did come to be over time (as do all other planets), and human beings did evolve from other lower life forms and these life forms came from non-life forms on earth*. The evolution of humans as intelligent beings can also be explained by recourse to our evolutionary history.
The gradual process of explanatory revolution has taken place in a series of steps. First the church told us that the earth itself was the centre of the universe and excommunicated anyone who disagreed. Then it was realized that the Sun was at the centre of our local 'world'. Now it has been realized that planets orbiting a sun are actually quite common, and that the conditions for life must exist elsewhere in the extremely enormous universe, and conditions within these worlds, for intelligent life, mean that there must be/have been/will be intelligent life forms in thousands of other places in the universe.

*It's worth pointing out that we ourselves are, to some extent, aliens. We did not arrive here like this from outerspace, but some of the elements that are necessary for the construction of life as we see it could not have originated from the life cycle of our sun (it is too small), and must have been carried here from the explosions elsewhere of much larger suns.

If the bible is a hoax, why ? People rarely do anything unless there is some gain somewhere, and I can't see the point in over many hundreds of years writing and bringing together a whole load of bullshine. It was all written far before modern politics or power games so we can't drag the RC church into it. Surely it is at least as believable as aliens, at least that ought to be the first assumption of an open mind - until it is proven to be bullshine.

(What about the other sheep not of this fold ? John 10:16 - but very fanciful ! :-)

Question Author
