And others. It's from abbreviated Latin 'et alii', 'et aliae' or 'et alia' (masculine, feminine and neuter versions). It can also mean 'et alibi' for 'and elsewhere'.

It bugs me a bit as I have co-written a couple of scientific papers and often my name doesn't get credited - I'm second on the list of four authors and it usually appears as Dr ****** et al :(
