Not 100% sure on pulse jet without looking it up on Google.

Ramjet on the otherhand.  Imagine a hollow cylindrical pipe.  The end of the pipe it is constricted.  Now if air is forced into the pipe at very high speed (like on a wing of a plane) then the air gets compressed at the constriction.  This causes the air to become red hot and then fuel is injected/sprayed onto the hot air and ignites.  It then causes thrust to come out the end of the pipe. 

I believe ramjets only really work at speeds above Mach 2/3.  Basically it's doing the same as a jet engine without the engine components!
