I'm pretty sure my bad nights sleep was kicked off by hearing my neighbours having a massive barney so during my many awake hours I was thinking about this.

If your neighbours were having a huge row and you could hear things being thrown/banged around, when would you feel (if at all) like you should get involved? Maybe call the police?

After it had gone quiet I kept thinking what if she's hit him over the head with a saucepan A La Pauline Fowler!

Spang? I'm confused.
Well....I've heard one argument form next door and it sounded bad. The kids were screaming and she was shouting 'please don't'....it didn't last long. The next time (I thought) I heard it again I made OH go next door to check.....They were playing a Harry Potter computer game with their visitors....haha.

They did invite him in for a drink :-)
I phoned Crimestoppers when my neighbours were fighting. I don't think anything was ever done though.

It would be the sheep around here - having perhaps a horn-in......thats about it, short of the dead moving in the Church (I'm outta here if they are moving) or trees crashing.

Oh my god ummmm, that's so funny. Could job he didn't call the police.

I did hear on a news clip last week that near where I live the police got called to a house after hearing a woman scream. The went it to find that they were filming Don't Tell The Bride and she had just seen her dress. lol.

ha ha, now I'm with ya Bibble!
Best not to get involved in other peoples' domestic problems EvianBaby. If they've been drinking they could well both turn on you or they could decide to call the police to you in the future in retaliation. If things were being smashed up and someone was obviously in distress then maybe call the police, but not otherwise.

I sleep very little and I'm usually awake all night. My neighbour snores so loudly I can hear him next door, especially in the early hours when all is still and I've got windows open. When I go to bed about 5 or 6am I sometimes put in earplugs so that I don't hear him! I've thought about mentioning it - how could I ever say anything to him?
For one night I'd probably grit my teeth and put up with it. I expect my nieghbours to put up with me so ..... But if it was regular there must be a council department that deals with noise. Possibly Environmental Health ? Worth calling and finding out.

I do think it would have to sound horrendous for me to feel like I should do something. Especially as on the whole they seem like a nice family and are usually fairly quiet. I think she just likes a good old blast every now and then.
I worry myself sick about our neighbours, they are always shouting and screaming at each other and it sometimes sounds like she has been hit, I really don't know what to do about it. She screams at the little ones and he shouts at them, she has even had a slanging match with him in the street. One minute she is laughing manically and the next they are rowing.
At my last house the couple across the road had regular domestics.
One Sunday night they started " I'll f***ing kill you"..............and then the other one " I'll f***ing kill you".
After this had gone on for some time I opened the bedroom window and shouted " If you don't shut up I'll kill the f***ing pair of you".............all the other neighbours who were, unbeknown to me, standing outside applauded.
I was mortified..............
Reading Ummm's post has reminded me of when I visited my mother and step-father one evening many years ago. I smoked at the time so I was often going into their back garden to smoke. While I was smoking in the dark during this visit I happened to look up to the neighbours' bathroom window - and I saw flames flickering inside the house. There were no other lights on and my mother and step-father said the neighbours were usually out on that evening in the week. We all saw the flames so we called the fire brigade who took about ten minutes to arrive with sirens and blue lights flashing. While one fireman hammered on the neighbours' door others were unrolling hoses and I showed one of them the flames still visible in the bathroom.

Then the lights came on in the hall - and my mother's very respectable, middle-aged neighbours opened the front door in their dressing gowns blinking at the blue lights and all the fuss! It turned out they had both been in the bath by the light of candles! My mother had to apologise most profusely and try to explain we thought their house was on fire! I scarpered pretty quick!

My mother said her neighbours saw the funny side of it after that! That taught them though!
Pretty quiet usually, I wouldn't interfere, unless there were cries for help and screaming. It's usually me and Mr grumpy who row.
I did go round a see a neighbour one night when I heard her come home sobbing (I was out in the garden, heard her and went round.) Turned out she had had a row with her gfs and they had made her feel broccoli. So I went back to mine, grabbed a bottle and we sat in her conservatory and put the world to rights. Glad I did that that night.

On the other hand, me and the OH have some hum dingers. Thankfully we are significantly detached so the chances of anyone hearing me yelling at him and chucking plates at the wall are somewhat remote.
Barmaid - broccoli?
Broccoli = s h i t e
Thanks Ummmm. Not heard that before. (I lead a sheltered life!)
