where did "to call a spade a spade" come from?

Could it come from the fact that a spade is such an obvious bit of equipment?
Its origin I am unsure of. Wilde uses it in "The Importance of being Earnest" which greatly popularised it..... "I call a spade a spade" "I am gratefull that I have never seen a spade"
