We used to sing that, not stand up and recite it! lol
It's not a cough that carries you off, it's a coffin, they carry you off in!
I was fascinated by The Jabberwocky:

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

A totally nonsensical poem, it really grabbed my attention and imagination
Matilda told such awful lies...
From the same author:

"You are old, Father William", the young man said,
I'm a little teapot............dont think tots today know what a teapot is.
nicholas nye was lean and grey, lame of a leg and old, many a donkey year has passed since nicholas nye was foaled.....walter de la mare
I wandered lonely as a cloud......
We obviously studied Walter de la Mere too. The two I remember are 'someone came a knocking at my wee small door....' and also 'poor tired Tim, it's sad for him.....' Both by de la Mere. We also had to learn the words of Jerusalem for a choir competition.
A little peach in the orchard grew
A little peach of emerald hue
Warmed by the sun and wet by the dew
It grew
jackdaw, Matilda told dreadful lies.
Do you mean poetry poetry or sing song poetry. Does that count?
Dreadful eyes - how did she see?
The war god Thor went out one day,
upon his favourite filly.
"I'm Thor" he cried,
his horse replied,
"well uth the thaddle thilly".
Made me look, made me stare, shoots!
I remember, I remember
the house where I was born
the little window where the sun
came creeping in at dawn
I must go down to the seas again,
to the lonely sea and the sky
and all I ask is a tall ship
and a star to sail her by.
