Please can somebody explain why it is drop a clanger? My brain has gone out to lunch!

This is one explanation.

A clanger was a pastry parcel with meat and veg at one end and jam at the other and a wide crust as the handle. It was called a clanger. If it was dropped the meat and veg would get muddled up with the jam – a mess. Hence the phrase dropping a clanger – meaning making a faux pas or embarressing mistake’
I don't have a clue which crossword you are talking about or what the clue is so I can't help with this one.

1a. Answer is Drop a clanger but I couldn't work out why. Am new user to this site so apologies if I didn't make myself understood. Will do better next time!
