I've noticed that an awful lot of Christmas films make reference to the non existence of a very important festive entity when watching them. When watching them with my 7 year old child I find myself cringing and waiting for the inevitable questions, but thusfar they have never come, what gives?

Faith and innocence. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)
Do you think your 7 yr old knows about it, but is playing along with you? I remember the tooth fairy...

It's funny, I was talking about it with my wife earlier and as douglas says, innocence. I know from general chit chat that he has absolutely no doubts about Father Christmas and its great fun. Santa should remain in all parents hearts and therefore in all childrens lives.
It's a game that all children play with their parents, a sort of double bluff, the child knows by 7 that there is no Santa but chooses to play along with the parents. It's a sort of double delusion that both sides play. I can remember the first time I was aware of Santa and with a few minutes I'd deduced that it was a load of pony but let my parents believe that I believed for years after that.

I was the same situation for me with religion, pity it isn't for everyone.
"the child knows by 7 that there is no Santa..."

I'm sorry- what?

No Santa?? Don't be silly!

No way Geezer.
Who's zoomin' who? If you don't believe these alleged 'harmless, innocent' forms of deception have consequences down the road, when these children become teens and begin their struggle for independence, then you are only deceiving yourself.

Faith blinds one not only to reason but to the awareness that faith itself is the enemy conveniently cloaked in the disguise provided by its advocates and inevitable victims of their own undoing. With any luck these children will learn from this a valuable lesson in the virtues of honesty and in whom they can trust, which can be applied throughout their lifetime. Alternatively they will themselves become carriers and distributors of this insidious and dreadful social and intellectual disease.

Sooner or later, reality ultimately shines through proclaiming itself as the victor. Ones only choice in this matter is whether or not to find oneself on the winning side. One one knowingly chooses to be a loser. They just get there by playing the part.

Jesus or Muhammod or any of the rest of them are Santa too mib, is that what you are saying. Santa for the older age group?
"no way geezer" W-T-F does that mean? You mean you think children believe in Father Christmas for longer than that? or what?

Yes.
My son is 9 and still believes, just
My daughter was nine when she had doubts and that was only because her 12 year old brother gave her them...He used to tease her about it the little s0d.

Same here Jem with 13yr old son
I have no idea when my 14 year old sussed it out - and she has never openly said to me that she doesn't believe in Santa, but we don't mention him anymore. For a year or 2 back there when I mentioned him she would just give me a wee knowing smile...
My eldest son let on when he heard my wife talking on the phone to her mum about buying him an Arsenal shirt for xmas 2 years ago
Flobadob, Perhaps it's a bit easier to relinquish a belief in Santa given the espoused consequences are much less cumbersome and far reaching. It's a shame so many are unable to make the logical connection between belief in Santa and the rest. Fool me once, shame on you . . .

Well Santa is there for many children each and every year, whereas those other guys don't really do much for anybody. So Santa is far better than them. I don't know who'd win in a fight but but I'd say Santa wouldn't fight dirty but I wouldn't trust the rest of them.
there's only one way to find out
