5d. ma(n)y
5d mint possibly connection with lots of new spring lambs ?
12a. test?
5d Mint (as in 'mint condition') means 'new'. Fresh (new) mint is available in your garden in spring.
10d clarinettist
6d lithium (symbol Li)
6 LITHIUM
anagram of humilit(y)
12a viva

(i prefer many for 5d for Dinkypuzzled's explanation)
16a scampi
6dLithium-----------10dClarinettist--------12
a
Viva-------16aScampi
it's many new (n) in spring May= many which answers lots
12a = VIVA (Va with IV)
For once I disagree (but only partly) with Buenchico. What he says about MINT is correct but I'm sure the answer is MANY rather than MINT.
I'd go with MANY as well. Fits the clue better.
Question Author
thank you all for your help.Mint or Many is the stumbling block but I think I'll plump for mint.......
I'm not sure if you understand where MANY comes from

lots (The Definition)
new = N (abbreviation)
in (= contained within)
Spring = MAY (month)

All parts of the clue completely accounted for.
5d Many
Many fits perfectly.
Mint doesn't account for the word LOTS in the clue
