“Good Morning” to all AB Linkers from The Lady Ursula” (aka owllady) and “Welcome” to my third week as setter of the August MM Links Game. I am now over the half-way mark and by the time I master this IT malarkey, my reign could well be over! Nevertheless, I have learned how to handle myself more efficiently on AnswerBank
. I suppose this is an example of having to go through adversity in order to reach the stars (at the top of the IT learning curve). In other words: “Per Ardua ad Astra”, which many of you will recognise as the Latin motto of the RAF. Of course, living in Lincolnshire and surrounded by RAF bases, it was natural that I would meet my very own “Officer and a Gentleman” to sweep me off my feet and take me away from a life down on the farm!

Our first posting was to the stunningly beautiful country of Norway. The terrain (with its mountains, lakes and fjords) couldn’t be more different to that of Lincolnshire. What is more, we arrived during the winter of 1967 and the extreme weather proved a severe shock to the system. The winter nights can be particularly bitterly cold (often dipping to -30 degrees Centigrade). In fact, between November and March the temperature rarely climbs above freezing with an awful lot of snow everywhere. We quickly learned to brave the elements only when correctly dressed.
The local children survive very well and learn to ski by the time they are five years of age. Everyone skied, although I was never that courageous! I suppose the closest I’ll ever get to SKI is to “Spend Kids Inheritance”! Of course, my son quickly learned to adapt to our new life style. And why not? He was born in Oslo and could speak Norwegian (picking it up by playing with the local children) before he could speak English properly.

As Summer crept in, the great thaw began and we would travel down the fjord to watch huge blocks of ice come crashing down into the dark cold water. There is no more awesome a sight than to watch Mother Nature demonstrating her most majestic power whilst breaking the chains of Winter. Once firmly established, Norwegian Summers could be almost Mediterranean with long balmy evenings. Once the snow had been replaced by luscious greenery, the landscape became very similar to the Scottish mountains and rolling pine forests. In fact, Scotland was to be the next country to be called “Home” for the owllady and her family.
As usual, for the every-day running of MM, I shall follow the generally accepted rule on word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when I believe gen2 will cover for the absent crofter and declare my selected words, then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My third set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
