MM Links August 2010 [Week 2]

“Good Morning” to all AB Linkers from The Lady Ursula” (aka owllady) and “Welcome” to my second week as setter of the August MM Links Game. I hope you BEAR with me as I continue to learn my trade. My early background must have themes shared by many of my fellow AB Linkers.
I was born in Essex in 1946, but the family moved to Lincolnshire when I was 3 years old after my father left the army and the available work was mainly in the farming industry. I eventually attended the local village primary school from the age of 5 years old until 11. There were only 40 children in the whole school and I can remember distinctly the small bottles of milk being left outside the school gates. In the winter, the milk was frozen and had to be thawed out in front of the old pot-bellied stove (the resulting milk drink tasted awful!) and in the summer the blue-tits pecked through the metal-foil milk tops to get at the cream.

After passing the 11-plus examination, I qualified for the High School for Girls in the local town. I found it quite a culture shock – coming from a village school containing a TOTAL of 40 children and going to High School with 40 girls in ONE CLASS. Although I enjoyed my time at school, I left after passing my O level examinations aged 17 and went to work in a farm office doing wages and costings. All wages were calculated manually and paid out weekly in cash. The costings side of the job consisted of estimating how much profit each field on the 6,000-acre farm would yield from ploughing to harvest.
The farm produced all kinds of crops from corn to pulses. The area factory dried the wheat and barley, which then went for animal feedstuffs; and the peas and beans went to the frozen food industry. I later learned that the factory extracted chlorophyll from grass and lucerne, which was then used as a food additive for colouring (as well as being used in the cosmetic and soap industry). I had five happy years “down on the farm” -- until I married into the RAF, but that is another story!

As usual, for the every-day running of MM, I shall follow the generally accepted rule on word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when crofter will declare my selected words, then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My second set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
