Does anyone know which song topped the charts on New Year's Day 1964? I read that it was 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' by the Beatles but then I read that this did not hit the British Charts until the middle of January that year. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks.

According to this, you are right - they topped the chart before Christmas and there was no new chart until mid-Jan 1964, so the Beatles were still no. 1 on 1st Jan 1964. http://en.wikipedia.o...m_the_1960s_(UK)#1963
According to a book I have (Guinness Top 40 Charts) you are correct with I Want To Hold Your Hand.
