up until very recently i thot being able to" find work was just that an "excuse" My feeling were that anyone who truly wanted to work woud find something even if it was a very menial job that they were over qualified for. I'm changing my mind though. My stepson is applying for everything and anythin without success. Granted he is not qualified in anything and did really poorly at school. But he is a lovely young man who will work so hard if given the chance...but with the work situation it is so tough on "first timers" He is getting quite frustrated.

Maybe he needs to start off by finding some voluntary work or working just a few hours a week somewhere just get his foot in the door or get something on his CV.
He is going to find it difficult given his poor academic record. I'm not sure in your stepson's case why he didn't do well at school but it is the case sadly that too many youngsters (often with the parents turning a blind eye) fritter away their time at school and regret it later.
ask at his local job centre about work trials
can he go to college to get some qualifications?
Finding a job in these times can be quite tough, especially without an education or qualifications. Many employers these days are using employees to do the job of two or sometimes three mans' work.
I wish him much luck in finding a job.

Thanks all - sorry for tardy reply - I posted Q yesterday but then only re-logged on today. Yeah, his dad and I have told him if he has no luck soon then he needs to think about volunteering. This will give him experience and show future employers he isn't lazy and wanting handouts. with regards his education, (factor 30). No he did try hard at school but...he has always, always struggled. despite extra lessons privately paid for etc. In our opinion he is (like alot of youngsters which is shocking) only functionally literate!!! However give him summat practical and does very well.
