What is the meaning of 'register' in the following sentences?

For an instant, his eyes refocused, lingering on the reflection of his awkward face.dark and oblong, dominated by a flat, crooked nose that had been shattered by a fist in Spain when he was a young missionary. To 'register' in this sense, means to make an impression on or to reach someone's awareness. The person's nose had been badly broken long ago and so was afterwards, presumably, somehow misshapen or deformed. However, he had had the deformity for such a long time that he was no longer even conscious of the fact that it had ever been different.

Hi kayjay

Yes i initially - thought that it was

'the physical flaw was barely noticeable, that is, was not now present,

however since the author has described a flat crooked nose in the previous sentence,

it can only mean that A. did not notice it, even though it was there.

And then in the last sentence, we are told why, because A's world was of the soul and not of the flesh things like broken flat squashed noses.....

All the best - keep reading the pulp novels!
