same old same old from the moaners I see.

Simple, if you don't want to know answers, don't read the post.
If you don't like the way the site runs, don't use it.
If you don't like people using the site for these quizzes, don't use it.
Chelle7272 – thank you for completely missing the point in your otherwise highly considered reply! I take it that you are also in the ‘to hell with the wishes of the quiz setter we can ask anything we like’ camp. I don’t have a problem with AB. I simply have a problem with people who believe the quiz setter has no right to request that quiz questions are not asked on here and no right to have those wishes respected.
He can certainly ask but I doubt anyone will adhere to such an unrealistic aim.
For a well considered answer you would have to read my response the first time the 'AB police' turned up.
Or see the editors spot on post above.

I don't miss the point I just don't believe you are right.
Do I really need to repeat myself?
pulse876 – as you seem to be taking up the cudgel once again, may I point out the following.

As I stated above, I cannot find any reference made by Bill Maclagan, compiler, that contestants cannot seek answers on AnswerBank. He does, however, clearly state on his website (quote): Don't worry if some of the questions appear rather hard. You do have three weeks or so every month to find the answers, and of course you're allowed to 'Google' as much as you like!

So, assuming you are a competitor, and logically you want to search Google. You copy and paste the question into Google, ie Which well known actor, a star of a long-running film series, went to a public school which was co-founded by William Gladstone and is situated on the river that partially gives it its name?

And there it is . . . the first page on Google is Answerbank!

Amazingly – pigs do fly!
Hehe! nice one Ed.
lol - well said once again ed!
Of course it appears on Google! And how does that happen? By someone asking a question contrary to the wishes of a quiz setter. So all that proves is if those wishes are ignored then Google will spot it. Big deal!
'contrary to the wishes of a quiz setter'

Please clarify - a link would be useful
pulse876 - you forgot to notice that it also proves the power of AnswerBank. Bigger deal!
And in case any people have just joined in from google, I say again, the answer is Robbie Coltrane. :-)
QFC Quiz - Q77
Can anyone provide a clue as to the sports stadium in question 77 please? Many thanks boysinblue68 (Thu 21:34 03/May/07)

Well there's a turn-up. boysinblue68 asking for a clue on AnswerBank. No doubt to help find the answer to a Macmillan Cancer Support charity quiz question.

As long ago as 2007. Google never forgets!

Somewhat hypocritical, eh boysinblue68?
You ask for clarification of ‘contrary to the wishes of the quiz setter’. My point applies generally to any quiz where the quiz setter requests that questions are not asked, or not asked before a certain time etc. But in respect of Bill MacLagan I suggest you look at either

Squarebear – I note you are still being very childish by repeating the answer to the GBQ question. But you have not answered my question from the first page of this thread. Instead you have simply stated that ‘He can certainly ask but I doubt anyone will adhere to such an unrealistic aim’. Well suppose he does ask because he is going to rely on the honesty of people who say they have not asked questions on AB (or elsewhere) when determining their answers. If his request was well known and someone nevertheless asked one of the questions on AB then would you answer it? As a clue the answer is one word, either Yes or No. And given that this is AB and your attitude seems to be anything can be asked and by definition you must know the answer then I assume you will answer the question as posed.
pulse876 - despite your best efforts, one of those links does not work and the other leads to someone (NOT Bill Maclagan may I add) who simply states: ///I now have it on very good authority that it isn't acceptable to use forums like this or answerbank etc. to obtain your answers.///

That is inconclusive and simply an outsider's comment. A definitive statement by GBQ compiler is what we are seeking here to substantiate your illgotten beliefs.
Daily-Editor - not hypocritical at all. I fully admit I asked for a "clue" to one question, but that wasn't GBQ. Also, I did not enter that particular quiz, but having already purchased it, I was still supporting the charity.

The "lack of honesty" statement was not aimed at you. That was aimed at those who want to be spoon-fed the answers. I wondered when you'd get around to my username - I often wish I had never picked it. However, I don't use numerous names & have no wish to change as it has real meaning to me - purely football related & only one person has ever worked it out (see Sport section).

I think pulse876 has answered your query about the more respectable sites. They are sites that monitor GBQ questions & remove them or direct answers (in line with Bill's wishes). Try this link, I'm not a techie but hope it works. In google, the first hit gives you the forum page & the first thread should help you.

If you actually entered GBQ you would see in many newsletters that Bill has repeatedly asked that sites such as AB are not used. The majority of competitors comply with his wishes-unfortunately, not everyone does. Of course, he does not stop anyone using the internet, but as I said earlier (it appears conveniently overlooked by yourself) there is a distinct difference between using the internet yourself to search for an answer & posting a question directly on here & waiting for someone else to tell the world. I'm sure you too would find it frustrating if you did the research yourself & found the answer & then saw the answer freely given away to people who can't be bothered to do the headwork?

I feel I am entitled to my opinion just as you & others are. However, I do feel my comments are not rude or abusive (like some I could mention, not you). Again, I will repeat, I am not the so-called police, just someone who wants to see fair play.
Daily-Editor – I’m not aware the GBQ newsletters are available online. But if you are not prepared to accept the views of people who have seen them (as per the two websites I quoted to you and (I assume) boysinblue68) then I’m afraid it is you who has the ill-gotten beliefs.
boysinblue68 and pulse876 - i can conveniently respond to you both in one comment.

The quiz-zone link that you both provided is as I said, just the views of someone who has 'heard on good authority'. And not conclusive evidence of a Bill Maclagan request. I would certainly be fascinated to see that claim in writing.

And I reiterate that Frank23 in the original post here did not ask for the answer - merely copied and pasted the question.

bib68 - you have been advocating and repeatedly stated your opinion for a number of years. That's fine - but after all it is merely an opinion. People on AnswerBank and other Q&A sites and in particular on this thread, have opinions too and unfortunately, despite your campaign, you also have to respect that. So there is a status quo.

and, pulse 876 - you are using mere mutterings which most probably will go above peoples' heads.

To both of you, accept it or forget it.
Well - that was exciting!
Yep lil - no doubt that's it - 'til the next time
