In a reference book under pasture I have found raik but can't find it in my dictionary!Skail or scail?

Thank you strathspey! I'll go with RAIKS for 23a with 24d now being S?A?L - ido think this to be SPALL but I can't find a definition to EXACTLY fit the clue!!!

Thank-you all! It is SCAIL, found it in Chambers Scots Dictionary! I keep forgetting that I have this book and I'm sure I'd finish this flaming Xword sooner if only I'd remember!!

I think this is SPAWL, which mean to scatter spittle, etc., as you speak

No it's SCAIL or SKAIL depending on where in Scotland you are from! This is a word I use regulary but didn't recognise it from the spelling!!!

Forget SPAWL. it's definitely SKAIL.
