'It's soft inside straw once bound round'. (5) 'Whipt'?

Is 'whit' an archaic word meaning 'straw'?

Hi Andy - yes Straw is listed under Whit in Bradford's 6th but surprisingly not in Chambers 9th! Presumably well and truly archaic. Cheers, ja
