9d E is correct, what is the abbreviation for EDGAR, and if you are searching what are you looking ..............
Tried to be helpful, but without giving the acyual answers so you benefit from solving the actual answers yourself.
BTW OOGAMOUS is corrrect, do you remember the Mr Magoo who was shortsighted? Then you can work out the wordplay.

Thank you all for your assistance! I appreciate the time and patience DocHH has taken to "hint" me through to the answers!
Hello Matakari
I have bookmarked this thread, and am happy to provide some more hints if required! BUT they will only be hints, and at times they might be more obscure than the actual clue!!
Ciao
Question Author
Thanks for the offer DocHH! I am all too ready to learn! Right no, I have what I think might be the beginning of part of the quotation:" I never knew anyone who..."And now again...
ACROSS:
31.Female character with hairstyle ( 5 ):R???A (RASTA?)
DOWN:
19. Roman regularly taking cure-all(10): ?A?A?L????
30. Don the priest comically stripped and dressed(7):??M????
32. Cheat never present for godly purposes (6): T?N???
25. Gang nicked relics ( 5 ): ?O??

Thanks for any hints....
31a Girl's name = greek character + abbr. of teddyboy hairstyle.

19d . referring to church of Rome + regularly taking (medication) = cureall

30d Name of fictional priest - Don -------. (c)omicall(y) = stripped, then dressed (anag)

32d cheat + never (dialect word) = gift for religious purposes

25d is not really a good clue, in my opinion the last word should be singular. If you look in Chambers for the definition of that word, then look up the defition of that word. The entry in the grid is immediately above.
BTW I liked kettledrum's hints.
Question Author
Many thanks for the hints, DocHH...very helpful, indeed!
Question Author
Thanks, kettledrum, for the hints...ingenious, and I've been able to get them out! Getting better at this now!

26. No constant captions niggling in perfect places( 7 ):?T?????
29. Diamonds and clubs held by one bridge player(3) ??E ( ACE?)
Many thanks in advance again!
22, about can be either RE or CIRCA, you can guess which this time, what is 6 in Roman numerals and abbreviation for large.
27 Good guess, but Australian Capital Territory is more germane.
36, This is a realy nice clue, what is the abbreviation for APPARENTLY, then a word meaning jump, followed by a word meaning concealed,
39 the answer is a person from Greek mythology, first 5 letters mean preferred, or what you do when you vote for someone, last 2 are the abbreviation for artist.
41 An artistic word meaning LOok in a shortened word meaning cottage.
23 Shorten LARk, what is the abbreviation for caught, then anagram of ERNE. What is another word for someone who steals, think along the lines of legal terms.
26 C= constant, so remove that from CAPTIOUS and what do you think "niggling" means, it is actually an anagram indicator.
29 Having trouble hinting at this one, but one can mean A or I or AN, C = clubs as in cards, then who are the 4 bridge players final answer is what we dread during this cold weather.
Matakari, I am very happy to help, I just hope my typing is up to the task. If you are new to cryptic crosswords, then you have chosen a quite difficult one to start with, especially as there is always an extra twist to this one.
Ciao
Sorry Matakari, I missed out a hint for 38a, it's also the name of part of the Thames, near Oxford I believe, first letter = 3rd letter and 2nd letter = 4th letter. Your N is incorrect.
You are OK with your earlier post in terms of the quotation! Look at the MYNAS NOISIER and the corners, which will also help with the quotation. Ask yourself what cruciverbalists ar interested in!!!
Question Author
Many thanks, DocHH! Yes, I know this puzzle is by no means straightforward...I have been doing the easier types, but do not find them challenging at all. That is the reason for my tenacity here! I am determined to grasp this technique and with your patience, I will! Now, to verify some answers, please!

ACROSS:
22. CAVIL 27. ACT 36. APPLE APHID ( I did get this one before!) 38. ISIS 39. ELECTRA ??

DOWN:
23. LARCENER 26. UTOPIAS 29. ICE 30. DOMINIC ( then out goes ELECTRA) 32. DONARY? 19. CATHOLICAL?
25. ?O?PS ( still giving some trouble)
Thanks again, DocHH! And your typing is very much up to the task!
All your answers are correct except for DOMINIC. The clue says "comically stripped and dressed", this is the cryptic part and means you remove the outer letters of c)omicall(y and then anagram it. The result is Don ?????? " a fictional priest".

Had you noticed the relevance of the title to the number of the crossword? They also represent the initials of the quotations author. The 4 unclued lights are all names beginning with the authors middle initial. Had you noticed the symmetry of their positions in the grid?
Question Author
Many thanks again, DocHH! Yes, I am beginning to see the light with regards to the relevance of the number to the crossword title...In the perimeter, I think another word s "words". I have got the C name for 20A...34A and 28D are still elusive, but they should soon fall into place! The priest is still giving me something to think about. If ELECTRA is Ok, then I am left with:DOMIL?? for 30D
For 41A, I need to keep LOOKING for that COT and putting it all together! It's fun, and I am learning in the process!
ow, let me impose, once more, for 2 final hints for the following:
DOWN:
35.Cat runs inside for sparrow grass (5): SP?N?
37. Turk has man out for 4 ( 4 )?T??
Now I hope 40A ( Nude goddess gets silky fabric -4) is:BALEEN
Thanks again for being so patient with me!
Hello Matakari
What is the letter representation for the Roman numeral for 1900?
You are correct with another word in the quotation being "words". Google that with all you have already.
The names at 28d and 34d are anagrams of each other.
How about we try something else for the PRIEST, first three letters are a river in CAMbridge followed by not very well (another 3 letters) then a circle/o, once you've go that Google
GE is a goddess (Earth Goddess actually), so 46 is not BALEEN, what is a word meaning nude, that is ?A?E follow that by GE and there you are for that answer.
4d is Rose Oil and there are several ways of spelling that one is Attar, another a Turkish empire, minus MAN resulting in the answer.
35d is difficult to hint at, but it is a dialect for asparagus. I'd go for (s)mall seat (pew) swallowing a (r)iver.
Question Author
Very happy about this! Thanks very much, DocHH! Actually, I did get CAMILLO,but somehow thought DOM had to figure in the grid.Everything is perfect now save the perimeter ( "I never knew anyone who was a damfool for words?" And I am mulling over the rest of the letters for the mystery name: M??IA?N?C?O?R?I Very interesting, indeed! I am much obliged to you for all the help you have so selflessly given! Cheers!
Question Author
Eureka! A very good day to you, DocHH! I found the name of the author. The C fits neatly into place and I don't need to search any Moore...Just trying to wind up the quotation now...Any more hints ( no pun intended! ) on that score? One of her texts, perhaps? Many thanks again! I keep learning, thanks to you!
Will I do?
I never knew anyone who had a passion for words is the quote
Her middle name was Craig .Surname Moore
Female American poet
Question Author
I am indebted to you, shaneystar2! Many thanks! Does this mean, then, that 19 D ( CATHOLICAL ) is incorrect? Thanks for the help!
