You are a grocer A pain in the backside customer comes in asking for1642g of sugar. you have modern scales but the electric has failed, you have one weight only 821g. In your big bag of sugar you know you have 16.42 kg.How do you ensure he gets his 1642g.

All the humerous ways have been tried . eg come back when powers back on. I dont know answer ,surely theres someone out there that does.

just sell him the bag the two amounts are the same
sorry having one of those days is totally wrong LOL
It depends on the type of 'modern scales'. If they are in the form of a 'pan balance' , it can be done quite easily without electricity.
Maybe I am missing something here - but isn't 821g x 2 = 1642g?
So if you weigh out 2 x 821g you have 1642g... as requested.

Pan balance answer was rejected.

Two amounts are 1642g and16.48Kg Ten times as much.

Still not solved , keep thinking . Think of Great britain and St George/Andrew /David Hope I havnt left anyone out.
I am with pbeach. Why isn't that acceptable?
well you have to put the 821 on something one side and then ur the sugar onto somethign welse the other side to m,atch the weight and do that twice. modern scales donl;t give u that balance thing like old kitchen scales did with weights
does the big contain 20 separate bags of 821g? you give the customer 2 of those and let him check them against you weight to show they are about right?

16.42 Kg is 16420grammes in bag

Customer wants 1642grammes

Weight is 821 grammes

Please be very careful shopping on continent
Back to your childhood when you were dishing out sweeties . One for you and two for me . Assume sugar is in lumps . Then go 1 for you and 9 for me . As to the lumps left at the end , a knife and a grocer's eye should do .
Celeryman: listen to pbeach! Just weigh 821gms twice! You'll get 1642 gms!!

You have nothing to weigh with!!!!!. Someone got right answer after a lot of false answers The sugar is in cubes of 1g you just count them out. Aunt Flo was nearest with her seperate bags idea. I suppose thats why sugar is the material. you couldnt do it with flour, for example. So noone gets the day trip to Paris with a 2 hour trip down the sewers. Eat your hearts out puzzlers.
