I have seen the answer to 27ac (being ten of several hundreds) given as essex. Can anyone explain this to me please?

Being = ESSE (from Latin, to be)
ten = X

A hundred was a division of a county and so several of them make a county.

Thank you very much - I've heard of the Chiltern Hundreds, but no others. And I looked up esse but my dictionary didn't give it, so I'm grateful to you for sorting this for me.
