I am trying to decide between a Panasonic TX-37LZD80F and a TX-37LZD85F. The set will be used for routine TV watching (not games).

The features of the 80F are fine except that it is 50 Hz while the 85F is 100 Hz.

Opinions, please, on whether the 100 Hz is worth the extra 200.

Unlike on a CRT display, where the pixels start to fade as soon as the scanning electron beam has passed over them, pixels on an LCD remain the same until they receive a signal to change. Therefore as long as the refresh rate matches the frame rate (or a multiple of the frame rate), IMHO the actual figure (at least fro TV programs and the like) is not particularly important.
the 80 got 2stars - the 85 got 4
but the toshiba 5050 and sony 3500 both got 5!
