Please could someone explain where the ON comes from in the answer DAMSON given on Saturday as the answer for 4d in Friday's Daily Telegraph Cryptic crossword. The full clue is:

Mothers regularly taking fruit (6)

I see 'Mothers' = DAMS
but what about the ON?

Any ideas?

I take it the 'regularly taking' means as in taking a medicine. Ladies are said to be ON the pill. I assume this is the answer.
Could it be Dam Son?

sddsddean, that sounds reasonable, thank you - it wasn't something I'd considered. - I was looking for a word to remove alternate letters from (regularly).

hau kola, If that is the case, you are still left to explain 'SON'?
