Let me interpret the question.

It is asking:
How many whole numbers are there BETWEEN 5 and 9?
Sorry, I misread your question as 5 < x < 9

If it has to be 5 < x > 9 , as typed, then the answer is 'an infinite number' since x has to be greater than both 5 and 9.

Here it is again

How many integer solutions are there in the equality 5< x < 9?

Sorry! Can you help?
To follow on from where Gen2 was (? before he went for his lunch?):

For 5 to be less than x which is less than 9, there are 3 solutions .... x could be 6, 7 or 8
