Thank you all for your helpful replies - but not quite helpful enough for this dimwit on his return from a hard day at the office.

Four of the unclued lights have(?!) to be diviner, after, symbol and analyse but I'm blowed if I can make the connection. Another little clue before I admit defeat and ask outright!

Thanks.

use an anagram solver on the internet and find one of the words in the grid that has at least 8 anagrams

the 8 words which need filling in are synonyms of these different anagrams.

the one im stuck on is one down though but have the rest
Question Author
Thanks cruci'. Am I right in thinking it's Pears=apres=after?!

Still don't see it though. Diviner is an anagram from the letters in Vin Ordinaire? Or am I barking up the wrong cryptic tree?

I'll kick myself if/when the penny drops!
yes to the first

forget vin ordinaire as it is not a full anagram

diviner is a synonym for another anagram. similar to the first
Try using Chambers Word Wizard to establish the possible anagrams, then match them to the unclued lights you already have.

Thanks again cruci' Where would we be without the Word Wizard? Alas 1dn and 8dn are still defeating me!
In Bradfords, the most straightforward word that fits 1 d is listed as possibly "indicating an anagram". think 8 d is clip as a synonym of 40 a. But I'm stumped on 12 d (?U?RT? - quartz, quarto??) and I'm blowed if I can make that connection.
Cheers
Question Author
Thanks all. I think you're right pj with CLIP as the answer for 8dn but not for the reason you give. Clip is a synonym of pare which is another anagram of the shaded light referred to. Hence 12dn is QUARTZ(PRASE is the anagram).

Presumably you mean 'Distracted' for 1dn - your explanation seems plausible but I can't make a connection with10 dn as the preamble seems to suggest.
Cruciverbalist's posts seem to have vanished. I can only sign in to the beta AB site so not sure if this will get through. For 8d I have COIN. PARES (plural) I thought went with the name of the crossword.
Question Author
Why COIN slaney? I still think CLIP makes more sense for the reason above. Are you any the wiser re. 1dn?

cruciverbali's posts have indeed vanished. Oo er...spooky!
COIN,I thought went with the anagram ASPER.
Question Author
I'm convinced! Thanks slaney. 1dn?
dont like to be too blatant but this should clear it up

1d distracted = spare
8d coin = asper
if it was clip then it should be pare not pares
12d quartz = prase
pears and reaps would go with the title of the crossword being prunes
sorry that should be pares

I guess you'd had enough of my ramblings midazolam. Many thanks anyway.
