Thought I'd finished but 5th letter, 'b', of 'danube', clashes with 4th letter of 'quattrocentists' where these two words cross. Is there an alternative spelling for either word? Many thanks.

That would be because Danube is not the correct answer. Do you wish to have another look at that clue or for the answer to be given?
I have Donets for the river
Well, thats that then!
captainandy ..I apologise if you only wanted a hint....

Thanks, Slaney. Guessed Danube incorrect. Failed to find Donets in my 'Times Atlas of the World', Google seemed to confirm Danube, and Wikipedia's alternative spellings for Danube lack the letter 't', which stumped me. And, no, I wasn't looking for hints!

Thanks again
Aren't you nice! You have a chance of looking for another answer when someone tells you you have an answer wrong and cannot be bothered to acknowledge that help.
Just a further point of issue with alternative spellings, the Italian for artists/authors C15th Italy is "Quattrocentisti".

I wasn't certain of the better alternative, so the copy I eventually forwarded shows both options in a split square.
Hi, sarumite ..I was just going to post with that very query..I am marginally in favour of Quattrocentists -- the only version in Chambers.
Quattrocentisti gets more Google hits, however.
That's very interesting Sarumite - do you know whether that's allowed? I had the same problem recently with the answer 'rosin or resin' for substance to put on violin bow as they are both correct and used interchangeably by violinists..... but plumped for one in the end. I did think about putting both in but thought that I might be disqualified!

Hi cheaton ... I really have no knowledge whether or not it is acceptable, but considered it would be unreasonable
to disqualify a drawn entry for offering two "correct" options!
i pondered this as well ....

as this compiler regularly has answers in foreign languages, scottish welsh french italian etc, I opted for the Italian 'Quattrocentisti' - since the clue ..... IN C15th Italy.

(quattrocentists is english word)
